The Cessna 180
The most popular of Cessna's taildraggers, or "conventional landing gear" aircraft, the Cessna 180 / 185 series boast some incredible qualities: Good range, load and short field capability. All wrapped up in a cosy, robust, and simple fuselage, these aircraft are the mainstay of private back country enthusiasts as well as working commercial operators in Alaska, northern Canada and other places around the globe where short unimproved fields or lakes need a pick up and drop off.
The Cessna CE-180 Skywagon
The key takeaways of this all new high performance single engine aircraft are:
- Developed in 1951 of the basis of a Cessna 170 structure
- Upgraded O-470 (225 HP) motor paired to an 88 inch prop
- Flush rivets, cowl flaps and other aerodynamic improvements over the 170
- Two 54 gallon rubberized bladder fuel tanks for great range and endurance
- 28 year production run with almost 6200 built

The Cessna 185
The most popular of Cessna's taildraggers, or "conventional landing gear" aircraft, the Cessna 180 / 185 series boast some incredible qualities: Good range, load and short field capability. All wrapped up in a cosy, robust, and simple fuselage, these aircraft are the mainstay of private back country enthusiasts as well as working commercial operators in Alaska, northern Canada and other places around the globe where short unimproved fields or lakes need a pick up and drop off.
The Cessna CE-185 Skywagon
The major upgrades / improvements over the its predecessor, the Cessna CE 180, were fundamentally around Cessna’s recognition that this airframe was a working commercial platform:
Engine upgraded from O-470 to IO-470 (260HP) for fuel injected 30HP boost. And subsequently an upgrade to the IO-520 for 285HP.
Higher power allowed its useful load to exceed its empty weight by 100 lbs. Eventually the Skywagon would get STCs for increased gross weight, up to 3600 lbs.
Optional cargo pod (300 lbs) and increased baggage compartment length gave the interior more room to put more stuff.
A total of 4427 were built over 23 years, bringing the combined 180 / 185 fleet to 10,634 Skywagons built - patently the most successful conventional geared single engine high wing piston in the world.

The Cessna 206
A little known fact about Cessna’s most popular utility and small commercial piston aircraft was that it was built off the popularity and comfort of the popular Cessna 210 Centurion series. Make the landing gear fixed, gain some useful load and presto - a legacy was born.
The Cessna CE- 206 Super Skylane and Stationair
The advent of the 206 was Cessna’s recognition that a smart modification to its 205 roots was needed - a new type certificate. The new Model 206 was certified in July, 1963 with the following key updates:
- A 285 horsepower Continental IO-520 engine
- Roomy and functional 42-inch cargo door
- Removal of the cowling bulge for a more streamlined look. (Where the nosewheel lived in the prior 210 retractable versions.)

The Cessna CE-207
After the success of the 206, the aircraft design engineers at Cessna went back to the design board to create a stretched version that would leverage what was good and get more of it. While this was functionally smart, aesthetically some rolled their eyes at the stretch to the CE 206:
30 additional inches were added beyond the rear doorposts.
What you do in the back, you must counter in the front (balance!) .. .A front baggage compartment plugged in 18 additional inches forward of the firewall
A full 300 horsepower Continental IO-520 “F” engine upgrade.
Useful load of nearly one ton (and seven-passenger capacity!)
