The Gulfstream G150 made history even before it went into service with a record setting city-pair speed on a flight to Geneva, from Tel Aviv. Known for its durability, economy and versatility, the G150 is a consistent challenger in the midsize cabin jets.

The Gulfstream G100, a twin engine, medium, business jet, is an Israel Aerospace Industries manufactured aeroplane, which was produced for Gulfstream Aerospace. Even after this acquisition, Israel Aerospace Industries continued producing the airframes, which were then shipped to the United States where the interiors were fitted.

The G100, formerly known as the Astra SPX, was renamed and rebranded in September 2002. It was also in this year that Gulfstream announced the improved derivative, the Gulfstream G150. Upon certification of the G150 in 2005, the production of the G100 ceased.

A total of 123 G150s have been manufactured; 119 are still in operation and one has been retired. At present, only 11% are leased. Currently, there are approximately 30 listed for sale, with each aircraft remaining on the market for an average of 280 days.

America has the highest percentage of G150s, estimated at 83%. Adding to this statistic, is the fact that the G100 was also ordered for the United States Air Force, as well as for the United States Navy. These are fitted with a variety of military avionics systems, which is the main difference from the standard G100. The last sale of the G150 was announced in 2016, and the final delivery took place in 2017, owing mostly to slow sales.

The G150 is powered by two Honeywell engines, each offering 4420 pounds of thrust. This enables a range of almost 3000 nautical miles, a maximum cruise speed of 880 km/ h, and a long range cruise speed of Mach 0.80.

Though paired with the fastest speed and longest range in its class at the time, the G100 could not compete when it came to cabin comfort and size, which resulted in a cabin 217 cubic feet larger and 12 inches wider in the G150.

The oval shaped cabin can now comfortably accommodate seven passengers, with eight being the maximum seating configuration. The aircraft, with its top-of-the-line interior, comes with three seating layouts, namely The Executive, The Hallmark and The Universal.

General Dynamics, the parent company of Gulfstream, known for building nuclear submarines for the US Navy, offered acoustics advice during the design of the G150. This led to a notably quieter cabin; one of the quietest cabins compared to peers in the same class.

The G150 also offers both external and internal baggage storage compartments, 55 and 25 cubic feet respectively.

Takeoff performance is said to be reasonably satisfactory, aided by the jets high lift flaps and slats system, however, it has the lowest tanks-full payload amongst other light to medium sized aircraft. Still, there are few other aircraft in the medium class that can fly as far and as fast, with such a modest fuel consumption.

The aircraft has a certified maximum service ceiling of 45 000 feet, which it reaches easily at relatively light weights. An altitude of 41 000 feet can be reached in a mere 25 minute climb.

Unfortunately, the dispatch reliability of the jet falls short of Gulfstream’s set standards. The G150 has a substantial electrical load, resulting in the generators having to be overhauled at every 500 hour interval. In spite of this, operators and owners alike praise the product support they receive from Gulfstream; Gulfstream unfailingly rated as the number one in product support.

The exceptional durability of the G150 is attested to its certification to the MSG-3 maintenance standard. This standard requires for parts to be replaced based on condition rather than an hourly basis, the same procedure used by airlines. The incredibly sturdy design and construction is to thank for this.

With a well forged mixture of cross continental product support, an inspiring speed and range combination, Gulfstream’s financial strength and their undying commitment to improvement, the G150 is forecasted to retain a noteworthy retail value and have a long lifespan as a midsize jet in the business aviation sector.
